We Asked for $5,000, and Received $25,000!
Wal-Mart State Giving Program Grant Helps Feed Children in Southeastern Virginia

Norfolk, VA – For more than 9 years the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia’s Kids Cafe® program has been serving up nutritious meals in partnership with after-school programs for the benefit of hungry children in our area. Tomorrow, Tuesday, December 16, 2008 at 3:30 pm, representatives from Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. will be on hand at the Rosemont Boys and Girls Club to present a $25,000 check to the Foodbank for the purchase of milk, fresh fruit and vegetables for the Foodbank’s Kids Cafe program.

“The Kids Cafe program helps ensure that hungry children in Southeastern Virginia get the nutritional support they need to grow healthy,” says Joanne Batson, CEO of the Foodbank. “More than 4,000 children are enrolled in our after-school Kids Cafe program, and this gift from Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. will help provide over 16,500 meals to children in our area. Childhood nutrition is a priority for us; if children don’t get enough of the right foods such as fruits and vegetables, they cannot develop to be healthy, contributing adults.”

Local Law Firms In A Feeding Frenzy

Legal Community Breaks Record to feed the Hungry with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia

Norfolk, VA - Building on a successful first year and a 17 year history of the "Legal Food Frenzy" organized by the Norfolk/Portsmouth Bar Association, the Second Annual Statewide Legal Food Frenzy wrapped up April 11th, bringing in over 1.3 Million pounds of food statewide so far, and still counting! Locally, law firms, departments, and law schools raised enough food and funds to provide approximately 376,000 pounds of food for hungry children, struggling families, and senior citizens in Southeastern Virginia.

Winners in the statewide competition, including the coveted Attorney General's Cup, will be announced by Attorney General Bob McDonnell and the Federation of Virginia Food Banks on Thursday, May 1st. In addition to the statewide contests, local attorneys competed in the categories of small, medium and large organizations, depending on staff size. The results were calculated per capita, so smaller firms in each category could realistically compete with the larger ones. In the Southeastern Virginia area, the winners are:
Best firm overall: McGuire Woods, LLP (Norfolk)
Small firms: 1st place, LeClair Ryan (Norfolk)
Medium-sized firms: 1st place, McGuire Woods, LLP (Norfolk)
Large firms: 1st place, Vandeventer Black LLP
