Programs and Services
We distribute food every year to 29,000 individuals. In addition to operating the Community Thrift Store in Tasley, we give over 2,000 articles of clothing to families in need annually.
Volunteers are an important part of our work, donating their time to help distribute food and clothing to those in need. Contact the Foodbank for details on how you can help.
Food Distribution: We receive donated food from companies, grocery stores, food drives and other sources. The food is distributed through our 25 agencies including emergency food pantries, shelters, and elderly care centers.
Thrift Store: The store provides affordable clothing and household items to those in need.
Kids Cafe®: Currently there is one Kids Cafe site on the Eastern Shore. Please check our Kids Cafe link to see the site locations. Kids Cafe provides low income or at-risk children with a free, nutritious evening meal in a safe, supportive environment. Children also participate in homework help and other after school enrichment programs.
BackPack Program: The Foodbank on the Eastern Shore, a branch of the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia, is excited to be operating the first Foodbank-run BackPack Program in the region. Although the Foodbank offers some holiday and/or spring break bags for children to take home, this is the first program in which children receive bags of nutritious, easy-to-prepare food to take home over weekends and school vacations throughout the school year.

Without some amazing volunteers, this program would not be possible. The Women of Onley Baptist Church visit the Foodbank’s Eastern Shore branch to pack the bags with healthy food. Also, Northampton County Cooperative extension office has been providing the Eastern Shore branch with nutrition activity sheets, which are placed inside backpacks. The Foodbank understands that education goes hand-in-hand with providing children and families with nutritious food.
Thank you to the United Way of Virginia’s Eastern Shore for your financial support for the purchase of food for this vital program during the 2009-2010 academic year.
