June 1 – August 27, 2014
Feds Feed Families is an annual government-wide food drive campaign. The effort is led by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, in partnership with the Chief Human Capital Officers Council, Office of Personnel Management and the U.S. Department of Defense. All local Federal employees and military members are asked to support the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore by collecting food items from June 1 – August 27.
The Foodbank serves children, seniors and adults struggling with hunger in the cities of Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Suffolk, Franklin, and Virginia Beach as well as the counties of Southampton, Northampton, Sussex, Isle of Wight and Accomack. During the summer months, food donations drop severely. The need increases for families with children who are out of school and can no longer rely on the breakfast and lunch that they normally receive through the free and reduced meal programs. Federal employees can help by collecting our most-needed items:
Protein, Meat and Fish
peanut butter, tuna, canned ham, canned chicken, beans
Fruits and Vegetables
canned fruits and vegetables, 100% fruit juice, instant potatoes, fruit preserves, dried fruit
cereal, oatmeal, rice, whole grain crackers
pasta and sauce, boxed meals, chunky soups, stews
powdered formula, baby food, diapers, wipes

Amos DeJardins, an award-winning long distance runner, will be completing a 500-mile course over 5 days in Virginia to bring attention to hunger in our communities as well as raise funds for Federation of Virginia Food Banks.
He will begin and end his course in his hometown of Alexandria, and his course takes him through the mountains of the Blue Ridge, through the cities and towns of Central Virginia, and back up the I-95 corridor. Throughout his route, he will be joined by supporters, including some government officials, and will visit running stores and events as he helps kick off Hunger Action Month. You can follow Amos at /500in5VA on Facebook and @RunOnVeggies on Twitter.
Great American Milk Drive
April 2, 2014 - April 1, 2015
Text “MILK” to 27722 to make a $5 donation that will be converted into a coupon for our customers to be able to get a half gallon or gallon size of white milk at any area retailer.
Donations can also be made online at www.milklife.com/give. From April 15 through May 25, the MilkLife organization will match every donation, which means a $5 donation provides 2 coupons instead of just 1!

Feeding America is one of 10 charities chosen to pilot Charity Miles, a free iPhone/Android app that empowers people to earn money for charity while walking, running or biking. Participants choose one of the app’s featured charities and hit the streets. The app will track the participant’s distance and they’ll earn money for their charity. Bikers earn 10¢ per mile; walkers and runners earn 25¢ per mile—all up to an initial $1,000,000 sponsorship pool.
