Amongst the lessons, love

For many of those attending, Vacation Bible School is about fun times with friends during the summer break from regular school. For others, it’s a chance to teach kids about the love of Jesus Christ. For participants of one VBS program this year, it may have been about those things, but the program also provided an opportunity to follow Christ’s command to “Love your neighbors” by collecting money and food for the Suffolk Kids’ Cafe.

Long lines show increasing hunger

NORFOLK, Va - Distribution day for families eligible for the USDA's Emergency Food Assistance Program. At the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia, a stream of people walked into a room, to wait for food. Staff and volunteers kept moving in the warehouse. A steady flow of boxes moved toward waiting families. Some parents missed work, so they wouldn't miss an opportunity to feed their children.

Food drives bring hope to thousands with the help of volunteers

Sitting down to a bountiful feast with family and friends during the holiday season is something many of us look forward to each year. Making sure others less fortunate can do the same shifts the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia, and the hundreds of community non-profit groups it supports, into overdrive as they strive to raise awareness about hunger and the need for food drives. Marianne Smith, Chief Development Officer for the Foodbank, says there are many low-income families that are struggling every day to survive soaring food, fuel and healthcare costs.
